Plot
In this film, Zu (portrayed by Kate Hudson) is a newly-sober drug dealer separated from her family. However, following her grandmother Millie's death, she becomes the only guardian of her autistic, younger, half-sister, Music. Until then, Music was under the care of Millie.
Zu gets the help of her friend Rudy for dealing drugs. However, Zu was still in a tight financial crunch and cannot pay Rudy back as she is jobless. Coping with a younger sibling, that too an autistic one, was something new to Zu, and Music goes through a meltdown when one morning, Zu fails to braid Music’s hair. Fortunately for Zu, her neighbor, Ebo, comes forward and offers help to calm Music down. Zu appreciates his effort, and they become good friends.
As the days go by, Zu learns more about Ebo, a boxer teaching kids boxing. One of Ebo’s students was Felix, who lives opposite Music, and Zu has often seen him watching Music. She also learns that Felix doesn’t like boxing and comes to the class only because his father wanted him to. Slowly but steadily, Zu learns how to take proper care of Music. Ebo helps her a lot regarding this. All this while, Zu is continuing to deal drugs as she wants to support her dream of moving to Costa Rica one day.
After some time, Ebo admits to zu that his ex wife deserted him for his brother . Hearing this, Zu promises to accompany Ebo to his brother’s wedding. Meanwhile, Zu asks Rudy for drugs to sell to a high-status client who is a pop star. Rudy also asks Zu to take medication for HIV to a buyer, who Zu realizes is none other than Ebo. Before delivering the drugs to the pop star, Zu decides to go for a walk with Music in a park. Unfortunately, Music gets stung by a bee there and has to be hospitalized. This is when Zu realizes that she cannot pay for the treatment, as she left her bag with the drugs at the park itself. Distressed by the loss, Zu begins drinking again and suffers a relapse. She soon gets involved in a fight with Ebo's neighbor, and the police are called, and she reveals to them that she is on probation. It was on the same night that, Felix's parents get into a physical argument, and when Felix tries to intervene, his father accidentally kills him.
Later Ebo attends his brother's wedding without Zu. Meanwhile, Zu decides to send Music to an adoption center. However, she is unable to leave Music there. Instead, they choose to join Ebo’s brother's wedding, where Zu shares a kiss with Ebo on stage. Music now has a new support dog. The dog was thoughtfully applied for Music by Felix before his death.
Review

The script of the film was co-written by Sia and children's author Dallas Clayton. However, the movie was a disappointment to most people. It often seems to lack common sense, and even after trying her best, the director fails poorly to convey the message the film was intended to. The film received various negative reviews from different critics and also produced severe controversy for its portrayal of autism. If not for a few memorable moments and its game ensemble cast, the film should have been counted as a total disaster. Maddie Ziegler, who plays the role of Music, spends most of her time in the film with a radiant grin on her face, listening continuously to Music on her earphones, and hallucinating make-believe dance numbers. It all looks like a Sia video to the audience. So the real question is, was Music a real Sia fan? Is that why her fantasies sound and look like Sia videos?
Someone with a keen observation can easily distinguish that Ziegler plays two characters here: One as the autistic girl and the second one as the dream-world-with her version of Music, with wacky hairstyles, wears eye-searingly bright costumes and one who pulls off perfect pirouettes.
Despite the title of the film, the film is not about Music. It's about Zu. She's the one who has the most noticeable and varied story line and who understands the true meaning of family and love thanks to the misery experienced by the tragic disabled person and the people of color around her.
