Morphology and cell structure

M. hiemalis grows in expanding gray colonies. It grows branched sporangiophores that yielding yellow to dark brown sporangia which can mate to form black-brown, spiny zygospores.

Physiology

M. hiemalis is nitrate positive and requires thiamin to grow.
