Mnet (acronym of Music Network) is a music television and youth-oriented channel in South Korea owned by CJ E&M, a division of CJ Group.

Contents

The CJ E&M Center Studio located in Sangam-dong, Mapo-gu, Seoul is the broadcast and recording center of many Mnet programs with a studio audience, namely the live weekly music show M! Countdown.

The global website named for Mnet Global changed to MWave in April 2013. Other sites from Mnet are not affected with the change.

  • 1991-07-30 : Music Network established making it South Korea's first Cable TV Channel.
  • 1994-09-16 : Contract made with MTV to broadcast the latter's programmes in South Korea
  • 1995-05-26 : Music-centralized cable show 'Mnet' launched
  • 1996-11-21 : 24-hour broadcasting made available
  • 1997-07-28 : acquired by the Cheil Jedang Group
  • 1998-02-12 : first music channel to start online broadcasting
  • 2001-12-14 : contract with MTV terminated; Mnet programmes broadcasting 24-hours
  • 2004-04-08 : Programme ‘M! Countdown’ made its debut
  • 2005-09-23 : Mnet online music website established
  • 2006-12-09 : Mnet Japan established
  • 2009-07-24 : 'SuperStar K' competition series in which singers audition to get on the show.
  • 2010-07-18 : ‘SuperStar K Season 2’ writes the record of The Most View Rated Cable Programme, Rating 18.1%.
  • 2012-06-23 : 'Show Me The Money' is a South Korean rap competition TV show. The show has grown in popularity and it is credited with increasing the Korean public's interest in hip hop.
  • 2013-05-17 : First TV Drama Aired (Monstar)
  • 2014-02-01 : Mnet became South Korea's first Full HD TV Channel.
  • 2015-01-29 : Unpretty Rapstar program focusing on female rappers. The show, a spin-off of Show Me the Money.
  • 2015-02-26 : Programme 'I Can See Your Voice' made its debut, Due to the show's wide success and popularity, international versions have been made in Bulgaria, China, Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam.
  • 2016-01-22 : 'Produce 101, the biggest reality girl group survival show in the world. A unit girl group by choosing members from a pool of 101 trainees from 46 entertainment companies. The show has budget of all shows produced by Mnet at about four billion won (approximately $3.4 million)
