Born in Oakland, California, Mullany began his career performing stand-up comedy. After a stint on The WB sitcom The Wayans Bros. as "White Mike," he starred in his own series, Nick Freno: Licensed Teacher from 1996 to 1998. In 1999, he wrote and starred in The Breaks (film) as Derrick King. In 2003, he hosted an ABC reality series called All American Girl.
