Weinberger was elected mayor of Burlington on March 6, 2012. He is the first Democratic mayor since (current-U.S. Senator) Bernie Sanders was elected to the office in 1981. In the election for Mayor, Weinberger was endorsed by Sanders as well as former Progressive Mayor Peter Clavelle and Democratic Governor Peter Shumlin after Miro won the contested primary and was only facing token Republican opposition. Weinberger won with 57.7% of the vote. He was re-elected to a second term on a state holiday, Tuesday, March 3, 2015 (Town Meeting Day in Vermont).
