Mills Oakley was established in Melbourne in 1864 by a young Irish solicitor, John Scott Mills.Thirty years later in 1894, and long after Mills' death, Herbert Hill Oakley took over and re-named the firms Mills, Son & Oakley. As the decades passed, there were more variations in name and fortune until the firm became known as Mills Oakley Lawyers in 1996 and more recently re-branded to Mills Oakley in 2015.

In 2014, Mills Oakley celebrated its 150th anniversary making it one of the oldest law firms in Australia. Mills Oakley has proved to be a resilient law firm withstanding everything from gold rushes to world wars, from economic boom and bust to the occasional black sheep.
