Michael Shayne, Private Detective is a 1940 American mystery film directed by Eugene Forde and starring Lloyd Nolan, Marjorie Weaver and Joan Valerie. It is based on Brett Halliday's novel The Private Practice of Michael Shayne. It was the first in a series of Michael Shayne films starring Nolan.

Synopsis
A private detective is hired to act as a guardian to a wealthy man's daughter, who has been gambling away her allowance at the racetrack and associating with shady characters in a casino. However, he quickly finds himself embroiled in a murder case and has to stay one step ahead of the police while he attempts to solve it.
