History

In 2009 Vivanet changed its name to Medical Marijuana, Inc. and became the first publicly traded company in the cannabis industry. It has been described as a holding company for businesses that provides products, services and security relating to the cannabis industry. The company has steadily grown it's portfolio of subsidiaries to broaden their reach from customer products to research and development. Additionally, the company services include a licensing division that manages proprietary testing, genetics, labelling, packaging, tracking, production, and standardization methods for the medicinal hemp industry.

In the fall of 2014, the company filed a lawsuit against Project CBD and Stewart Environmental labs to dispute a report of “significant levels of toxic solvents” in the hemp oil offered by one of their subsidiaries. Stewart Environmental settled with the company but Project CBD filed an anti-SLAPP motion in May 2015.

In January 2015, Medical Marijuana Inc. acquired the hemp and marijuana marketing company, Kannaway, and its subsidiary, Dixie Botanicals, for an undisclosed amount.

In May 2015, Medical Marijuana Inc. became the first American company to secure an export agreement through Brazil's National Sanitary Surveillance Agency (ANVISA) for their product, Real Scientific Hemp Oil™. The changes in law were enacted to assist in relieving the onset of seizures in two adolescent patients in Brazil. The historic move by the Brazilian government was met with positive reception by the scientific community and members of the public alike. The decision was ushered in after a a family won a courtroom battle to legally use the HempMeds product to assist their daughter who was suffering from a form of epilepsy. The case of a 6 year old adolescent girl named Anna Fischer served as one of the major factors leading to the legalization of the company's cannabis products in Brazil. Fischer, who suffered from constant seizures was part of the case leading to a historic ruling that removed non-psychoactive cannabidiol entirely from Brazil's list of prohibited substances.
