Location

The road is being constructed in the Western Region of Uganda, Mbarara Municipality.

The road will start from Makenke in Kakiika Division then northwards to Rwebishuri before reaching Nkokonjeru. The road will then pass through a valley next to Ruharo hill. A bridge will be constructed at the River Rwizi. The road will then end at Katatumba resort on Kabale road. The road will cover approximately 14.5 kilometres (9.0 mi).

Overview

The road will help to decongest the city by providing an alternative route for large cargo trucks destined for Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, or the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The road was commissioned and launched by President Museveni on 1 March 2015.

Construction costs

The road is expected to cost about €170 million (US$210 million), of which the European Union is expected to lend about €122 million (US$153 million) with the Uganda government funding the remaining amount. In March 2015, the China Railway Seventh Group began construction.
