Boatwright received her B.A. from Stanford University in 1973, and her M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. She was a Phi Beta Kappa at Stanford.

Boatwright is professor of classical studies at Duke University. She is a specialist in Roman history, the topography of Rome, Roman women, Rome's northern frontiers and Latin historiography. In 1992 she won the Gildersleeve Prize, for her article "The Imperial Women of the Early Second Century A.C." in the American Journal of Philology (No. 112 (1991), pp. 513-40)
