Life and career

Born in a famous family of musicians, he is the son of violinist Michelangelo Abbado, the brother of conductor Claudio Abbado, and the father of conductor Roberto Abbado and digital artist Adriano Abbado.

As a pianist, he has repeatedly played all the twenty-seven Concertos for Piano and Orchestra by W. A. Mozart. He has played many times the entire piano work by C. Debussy. He also performed music by major composers, including J. S. Bach and A. Scarlatti, and piano and orchestra concertos, such as those by P. I Tchaikovsky, S. Prokofiev, and the Concerto for left hand by M. Ravel. He performed in the main halls of Beijing, Budapest, Buenos Aires, London, Milan, Montreal, Moscow, New York, Paris, Rome, Tokyo and Vienna. He has performed nine times a tour of concerts in Latin America. He has also taught masterclasses in Asia, Europe and the United States.

In addition to dedicating himself to the concert activity he has also been a teacher of musical composition for twelve years at the Conservatory of Bologna, Parma and Piacenza. He later served as Director of the Giuseppe Nicolini Conservatory in Piacenza (1958 to 1966), at the Conservatory "Gioacchino Rossini" in Pesaro (1966 to 1972) and finally at the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory in Milan (from 1972 to 1996 ). He was also a member of the board at Teatro alla Scala for twenty-four years. In 1993 he formed, together with Vladimir Delman, the Symphonic Orchestra of Milan "Giuseppe Verdi", of which he was artistic director from 1993 to 1996.

His numerous compositions have been published by leading Italian publishers, including Carish, Curci, Ricordi and Suvini Zerboni. In Japan, Russia and the United States programs dedicated exclusively to music have been performed.
