History

The school was established in 1950 and 50 year celebrations were held in 2000.

In March 1971, the high school was the site of a siege in which a 19-year-old held police at bay with a .22 caliber rifle for almost three hours.

Notable alumni

  • Rear Admiral Mark Bonser attended Macksville High School. He went on to become a flag rank officer in the Royal Australian Navy.
  • Public servant Tony Cole attended Macksville High School. He went on to head several Australian Government departments, including the Department of the Treasury between 1991 and 1993.
  • Cricketer Phillip Hughes attended Macksville High School. He died on 27 November 2014 following an injury two days before. His funeral was held at the high school, with the Prime Minister of Australia, Tony Abbott in attendance.
  • Greg Inglis attended Macksville High School.
  • Chef Billie McKay attended Macksville High School. She won series 7 of MasterChef Australia in 2015.
