Its name originated from the chieftain name in which the school is situated, Samambwa. The founder of the chieftainship was Matikidi Thomson Mhandabwe whose alias was Mapfumo . The alias Mapfumo is a Shona word meaning "Spears". Matikidi was a hunter who used spears, unlike his father who kept many hunter dogs. Matikidi's father was nicknamed Samambwa, a Shona language name meaning "the man of many dogs or the one who owns many dogs".

Matikidi himself was a hunter who used spears and many dogs, a profession that enhanced the use of his father's nickname; Samambwa. As for today the name has become the official family and chieftain name, hence Chief Samambwa, and Samambwa village.
