Northern Ranger entered service in 1986 with Marine Atlantic. In 1997, the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador took over all intraprovincial ferry service from the federal crown corporation in exchange for a one-time payment for highway construction and capital costs toward improving the ferry service.

Northern Ranger was transferred from federal ownership under Transport Canada to that of the Department of Transportation and Works. The vessel is now operated by Nunatsiavut Marine Inc. (NMI).
Northern Ranger is named after her predecessor, SS Northern Ranger, launched in Scotland in 1936 and operated by the Newfoundland Railway and later Canadian National Railways for thirty years.

She is operated by CAI Nunatsiavut Marine Inc..
