Lucius Wallace Briggs was born in Worcester in 1866. He studied as a draftsman in the local architectural firms of Barker & Nourse and Fuller & Delano, among others. In 1896 Briggs entered private practice.

In 1899 he became a partner in Frost, Briggs & Chamberlain with Howard Frost and C. Leslie Chamberlain. With that firm, he contributed to the design of such landmarks as the Slater Building and Worcester Technical High School. He left in 1912 to form his own firm, the L. W. Briggs Company. He died in 1940. The firm continued in business past Briggs' death, and was run by his son, Stuart Wallace Briggs. In 1949 the younger Briggs changed the name to L. W. Briggs Associates.
