As of 2001 India census, Kumarapuram had a population of 13,759. Males constitute 50% of the population and females 50%. Kumarapuram has an average literacy rate of 79%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 80%, and female literacy is 78%. Kumarapuram is a Panchayat town with Padmanabhapuram as its state assembly constituency in the green and vibrant Kanyakumari District. It also includes a part of Kodhanaloor and Velimalai. It is tucked between Thovalai, Thiruvattar, Verkilambi and Kodhanallur.

The Panchayat town comprises the small towns Manalikarai, Manakkavilai,Poovangaparambu, Kotticode, Koozhakadai, Karumbarai, Kaithodu, Perinchilambu, Pannipothai, Velimalai. Many years back the towns Perunchilambu, Pannipothai, Velimalai etc. had rich agriculture lands. All these small towns that were once known for their sprawling paddy fields have given way to Rubber Estates.The 6th temple of famous Sivalaya Ottam on 'Sivarathri' festival namely 'Pannipakam' and Chamundeshwari Temple and Badhrakaliamman Temple,Poovangaparambu is also situated in this town panchayat.

Living style

Even though it is a town panchayat, Kumarapuram is a place with typical village living style. Both Tamil and Malayalam speaking people are living here.

History

The panchayat town was once with the Travancore . The name "Kumarapuram" was said to be derived from "Kumarakovil" . Its also said that the name "Kumarakovil" was given only after the name of "Kumarapuram".The place was once ruled by Nair community members .Later on , after 1950s the place was occupied by Tamils and they started the civilization.

The old temples situated here are "Pannipakam Sree Siva Temple " , "Kattala Siva temple ", "Sree Sastha Temple " , "Sree Kailasam siva kshethram " , and ultimately "Sree Krishnaswamy temple Vazhikalampadu". The place also has "Christians " .Most of the population is Hindhus and Christians with few Muslim neighbours too. "St.Michael church ", St. Antony's Church , "Salvation Army church".

The place was once under the Namboothiri"s of "Manalikara Madam"(only historical remains exists now ) then with the Kshathriya Nairs.Now the place is rich with pure "humans" made of same blood and Flesh. Now the major category of people living are : Hindhu Nairs ,Kurups, Nadars ,Christian Nadars , Harijans ,Hindhu Velaans,Panikers and Christian Achayans("Malabar Catholics ")
