Kota Shrine (居多神社, Kota-jinja) is the Japanese Shinto shrine in Jōetsu, Niigata Prefecture.

History

Kota was one of the chief Shinto shrines (ichinomiya) of the old Echigo Province. It serves today as one of the ichinomiya of Niigata Prefecture. The enshrined kami are:

  • Ookuninushi no kami (大国主神)
  • Nunagawahime no mikoto (奴奈川姫命)
  • Takeminakata no mikoto (建御名方命)
  • Shinran found refuge at Kota-jinja when he was exiled from Kyoto in 1207.
