Kollanoor / Kollanore /Kollannur/കൊള്ളന്നുര്‍ is a South Indian family name which is widely spread among Hindus,Christians and Muslims. They originated in and around Palayoor, a village near Chavakkad in Trichur District in Kerala, India and many migrated to Kunnamkulam.

History

The men from this family had successfully resisted Tipus Sultan from conquering the Cochin Kingdom. It is traditionally believed that the men had affairs with princesses of the royal family of Cochin kingdom.

  • They looks back at their tradition of family to the counterparts of other 2 religions. They are the resultants of religious assault by Tippu Sultan. They now stay in and around Thirur, Malappuram District and also near Perumpilavu village.

  • Although the family name is spawn among all the three religions, majority of family members are now Christians. They belong to Astagrihas ( അഷ്ടഗൃഹങ്ങൾ prominent 8 Families evangalized by St. Thomas). Among Christians 30% are Syro-malabar, 45% Jacobite 15% Evangelicals and 10% Protestants. There are sub-divisions of Kollannur family according to the tribe where they had come from . Such as Kollannur-Tharayil, Mooleppat-Kollannur etc. During assault by Tippu sultan in Kunnamkulam, the male members (Except First Sons, who were considered as legal heirs) were sent to fight with Sultan's army and was brutally killed in the battle ground which is now known as "Kollannur Chantha" ( കൊള്ളന്നുർ ചന്ത ) now near Perumpilavu. They refused conversion and became martyrs. The rest of the family members were rescued by Cochin Kingdom and were relocated in and around Thrissur in areas such as Velapaya (വളപ്പായ ), Avanoor (അവണൂർ), Koonamoochi (കൂനംമൂച്ചി ), Parappur (പറപ്പൂര് ), Mattom (മറ്റം), Kechery (കേച്ചേരി ) etc.
