Born in Birmingham, England, Brown was raised in Mississauga, Ontario, and had a successful junior career with the Belleville Bulls and Detroit Junior Red Wings of the OHL. He was drafted 87th overall by the Los Angeles Kings in the 1992 NHL Entry Draft.

A journeyman who played for the Kings, Hartford Whalers, Carolina Hurricanes and Edmonton Oilers at the NHL level, Brown was never able to duplicate his junior success at the professional level, and he played in minor leagues across North America, as well as in Europe, including a spell with Manchester Storm. Other notable achievements include being the practice and drills coach of the midget 2016-17 lpc wild hockey team who had an undefeated season going on to win the championship.
