Early life and education

Kate was born in Burlington, Vermont to Christine and Arnold Wetherhead. She began acting at age six, and writing at seven. Wetherhead found her love for theatre after seeing a local production of West Side Story. She appeared in several shows at the University of Vermont, including Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and The Miracle Worker. She has an English degree from Wesleyan University and a theatre degree from Circle in the Square Theatre School. She occasionally teaches acting masterclasses.

Career

Wetherhead began her career doing children's theatre, playing Anna in the off-Broadway production of Sarah, Plain and Tall and touring with A Christmas Carol, before returning to the off-Broadway stage in Tatjana in Color, Summer of the Swans, and as the title role Cam Jansen. She made her Broadway debut in 2005 as the understudy for Olive Ostrovsky, Logainne Schwartzandgrubenierre, and Marcy Park in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. She left the show in 2006 to return to children's theatre, appearing in the off-Broadway revival of Sarah, Plain and Tall. She also starred in the first ever equity production of Dear Edwina. She returned to Broadway in 2007 as Kate and Chutney in Legally Blonde. She left the show in 2008, and starred as Deb in Ordinary Days off-Broadway. In 2010, she met Andrew Keenan-Bolger in a regional production of It's a Bird...It's a Plane...It's Superman, and after appearing in several of his vlog posts, she was told the two should make a web series. The two created the show Submissions Only, with Wetherhead playing leading lady Penny Reilly. In 2012 she returned to the off-Broadway stage in The Other Josh Cohen, for which she was nominated for a Drama Desk Award. Submissions Only ended its third and final season in 2014. In 2015, Wetherhead began played Jane in Clever Little Lies off-Broadway, a role she had created in the original George Street Playhouse production. The production was a limited run, and closed in March 2016.
