Kadayam is a village in the district of Tirunelveli in the state of Tamil Nadu in India. It is known for its association with the Tamil revolutionary poet Subramania Bharati.

Origin of the name

Kadayam is came from "KADAYAN PATTI" Kadayan patti ------ Kadayampatti --- Kadayam

Hundreds of years ago this place was known as "KADAYAN PATTI". Kadayan is the caste name of group people was living in this area. The other community peoples are migrated later. But nowadays there are other stories are spreads about the name KADAYAM.

Another legend say that the people were originally living around the kalyani amman temple and the goddess could not tolerate the noise created by the inhabitants surrounding her. She pulled out a kadagam (Bracelet in ancient Tamil) threw it to a distance and asked the inhabitants to go and reside round the spot where the bracelet fell. Thus this place was known as Kadagam, which later came to be known as Kadayam.

Association with Subramania Bharati

The eminent poet and freedom fighter Subramania Bharati once lived in Kadayam. Subramania Bharati's wife was a native of Kadayam and it is believed that Bharathiar often sang patriotic songs from the rooftop of his in-laws.Sri Subramania Bharathi, stayed in Pazhaya Gramam of Kadayam, with his family. People who lived in Kadayam during the 1930s & 1940s recollect the days when Sri Subramania Bharathi used to walk up to Nithyakalayani Amman Temple and sit on the flat squarish big stone and sing (create history) his several songs including the famous Kali songs, and the Panchali Sabhadam, etc. They also recollect his affection towards all living beings, including donkeys. At that time the village had several donkeys, and many a time, Sri Bharathiar used to hug the donkeys straying into the Pazhaya gramam. He sang his famous "Chinnanchiru Kiliye", "Odi Vilayadu Pappa", "Kaani Nilam Vendum", songs in the village when his second daughter used to play around in the road outside his house. After his death in Chennai in 1921, his family came down to Kadayam and stayed for about 10 years where after they shifted residence to Chennai. His descendants are now in Chennai and Mumbai. One of his great grandson Sri Rajkumar Bharathi shined as a noted carnatic singer. Now people living in Kadayam feel Bharathiyar's foot print in their mind when they walk on a flat squarish big stone near Nithyakalyani amman temple.

The Thala Malayan Temple

In the forested hills near the village is the Sastha (Thala Malayan) temple. The Ramanadhi (a tributary of the Thamirabarani) flows past this temple.

The history about Arulmigu Thalaimalai Ayyan temple is that whenever the village faced water famine, days without rain, vedic scholars used to do "varuna japam" sitting inside a big vessel filled with water within the temple precincts. The rain God used to bestow his blessings by pouring rain abundantly. This temple being open-to-sky from time immemorial and situated in the forest (about 7 km. outside village limits) several wild animals used to come inside the temple. On one such occasion, a wild-boar entered when the vedic scholars were chanting "varuna japam". All of them called upon the God by loudly uttering "Swamiye Saranam Ayyappa", at which time the wild-boar turned into stone. This stone animal can even now be seen inside the temple.

Sri Pathrakaliamman Temple- Kilakadayam

Sri Pathrakaliamman Temple is in Kilakadayam. It is dedicated for 18 Patti (Village) Nadar people. They are celebrating 8 days festival. On the 8th day Sri Pathrakaliamman and her elder sister Sri Mupudathiamman will meet, which is a spiritual movement. They are protecting our village.

All the 18 village people will participate and they will bring Pathrakaliamman on their shoulders. They bring Patharakali Amman to Mela Pathrakaliamman koil by a spiritual walk.

In '18 patti', the second pathrakaliamman temple is in Arunachalam patty only. Which is in next(North) to kadayam.

In case of Sri Mupudathiamman temple several peoples belonging to several caste get united and celebrating 10 days festival.1st day of celebration starts with yadav community people and final day ends with cops in kadayam.

Sri Muppudathiamman Temple- kadayam

Sri Muppudathiamman Temple is in kadayam. It is an ancient temple, daily pujai will happen at morning 11 a.m evening 7.30 pm. People are coming from different villages.

Katteripatty Muppudathiamman Temple

Katteripatty is one of the most important village in the Kilakadayam '18patti'(Village)and has a Temple known as ARULMIGU MUPPUDATHIAMMAN. Here five days IPPASI PERUNTHIRUVILA is a famous spiritual festival celebrated by the people of Katteripatty. on every Tuesday Special Evening Pooja conducts at this temple.

Rama Nathi and Kadana Nathi

The Kadana Nathi is running around Alwarkurichi area and which has a dam namely Gadananathi River Dam. Rama Nathi is running around kadayam area and which has a dam namely Ramanathi River Dam. These are the two rivers have keeping the Kadayam and surrounding villages are green. Thirst of the people and agri fields are being fulfilled by these rivers since long.

Lime

Kadayam is famous for acid lime varitey over Tamil Nadu, By its peculiarity and speciality TamilNadu Agricultural University has released a varitey PKM-1 through its research station at Periakulam by local selection from Kadayam.This is being exported to Sri Lanka and neighbouring states Kerala and AndraPradesh.There are more than five commision markets for lime in Kadayam.The uniqueness of Kadayam lime is due to soil type of Kadayam.

Unity

In kadayam more caste, religion and politicization peoples were living Here in Kadayam, But they never do any fight, they are forming as one unity group . In kadayam Play ground that is important source to prove this unity and peace . No violation.
