Joy Hofmeister currently serves as Oklahoma's State Superintendent of Public Instruction. Hofmeister was sworn in as Oklahoma's 14th State Superintendent on Jan. 12, 2015, after defeating the incumbent Republican candidate, Janet Barresi, in the primary election and Democratic candidate John Cox in the general election. Hofmeister's first term as Oklahoma State Superintendent of Public Instruction is four years long.

Hofmeister is a former public school teacher and small business owner from Tulsa, Oklahoma. In the private sector, she spent 15 years operating Kumon Math & Reading Centers of South Tulsa. This organization works through parent partnerships to ensure higher academic achievement for children. During that time she personally worked with more than 4,000 students to improve their educational outcomes.

Hofmeister graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Education from Texas Christian University, and holds teaching certificates in English and Elementary Education. As of May 2015, she is earning her master’s degree in Education Administration with a specialty in Education Policy and Law from the University of Oklahoma.

Hofmeister is a mother of four, all of which graduated from Oklahoma's public school system. Hofmeister served as an officer for the Jenks Public Schools Foundation Board of Directors, the Select Committee for the Study of School Finance and other committees within the Jenks Public School District.

Hofmeister currently lives in Tulsa, Oklahoma, with her husband and children.

Joy was charged and booked into Oklahoma County jail November 4, 2016, on charges of conspiracy and accepting illegal campaign contributions. Along with Hofmeister, prosecutors charged Stephanie Dawn Milligan, Steven Crawford, Lela Odom and Fount Holland with four counts for accepting contributions in excess of the maximum amount, accepting corporate contributions and two counts of conspiracy. District Attorney David Prater alleges that the money garnered from the illegal dark group contributions were used in a smear campaign against former superintendent Janet Barresi. Hofmeister has entered a plea of not guilty.
