Joseph La Piana (born March 5, 1966) is a New York-based artist. best known for his large-scale organic abstractions, like the Tension installation that was exhibited in Red Hook, Brooklyn in 2015. The scope of his work includes painting, sculpture, drawing, and photographs. La Piana often creates artwork around the relationship between light and kinetic energy. According to the artist, his work reinterprets of biological, kinetic, and mathematical theories, which he explores across various mediums and disciplines. He looks to identify the origins or DNA of objects and pair them with new elements and material. This gives the thing or object a new identity, function, and purpose, creating and revealing a new life. He uses this process to create new series from older ones.

Personal life

Born to Italian immigrants, La Piana was born in Brooklyn, raised in Queens, and now lives and works in Brooklyn. In an interview with Life + Times, La Piana said he often would draw, paint, and sculpt anything he could get his hands onto from an early age.
La Piana is an avid participant in philanthropy, donating artwork and supporting many charities like The Center (LGBT Community Center NYC), Coalition for the Homeless (ArtWalkNY), CITYarts, Inc., and Lambda Legal
Education and Art Career
La Piana received a bachelor's degree from Florida State University in 1988. He has been described as a self-taught artist, in the context that he did not participate in any program where his studies related to art. La Piana has lived in Manhattan for nearly his entire life, aside from a 10-year period during which he lived in California. La Piana was represented by the Robert Miller Gallery from March 2008 until 2012. He debuted at the gallery with his solo exhibition Kinetic State, a series of kinetic blow paintings.
La Piana has been written about in various publications including Life + Times, Architectural Digest, Remix Magazine, the New York Times, Paper Magazine, LA Observer, and Women's Wear Daily.
