The name became popular in Northern Europe, especially in Germany. Common German variants for Johannes are Johann, Hans (diminutized to Hänschen or Hänsel, known from "Hansel and Gretel", a fairy tale by the Grimm brothers), Hannes, Jens (from Danish) and Jan (from Dutch).
