Michigan law prof joan larsen
Joan Louise Larsen (born 1 December 1968) is an American judge and lawyer. She was appointed to the Michigan Supreme Court by Gov. Rick Snyder on September 30, 2015, to replace Justice Mary Beth Kelly, whose resignation from the Court became effective October 1, 2015. On May 8, 2017 Larsen was nominated to the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit by President Trump.

Education

Larsen is a graduate of the Northwestern University School of Law, where she graduated first in her class in 1993. While at Northwestern, she served as Articles Editor of the Northwestern University Law Review.
Law career

Larsen has been a professor at the University of Michigan School of Law since 1998. She clerked for David B. Sentelle of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit and for Justice Antonin Scalia of the U.S. Supreme Court during the 1994 Term. She was assistant attorney general in the U.S. Department of Justice Office of Legal Counsel from January 2002 to May 2003 in the administration of then-President George W. Bush. Larsen is a member of the Federalist Society.
Judicial career

On October 1, 2015, she was appointed to the Michigan Supreme Court by Governor Rick Snyder. She was reelected on November 8, 2016 to fill the remainder of Kelly's unexpired term, which runs through the end of 2018. She, along with fellow Michigan Supreme Court Justice Robert P. Young Jr., was on Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump's list of potential Supreme Court justices in May 2016, though the appointment went to Judge Neil Gorsuch of the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit, who was confirmed by the United States Senate on April 7, 2017.
Federal judicial nomination
On May 8, 2017, President Trump nominated Larsen to serve as a United States Circuit Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, to the seat soon to be vacated by Judge David W. McKeague. Her nomination is currently pending before the Senate Judiciary Committee. A hearing on her nomination before the Senate Judiciary Committee was held on September 6, 2017.
