Life

He was an undergraduate student at the Hangzhou University in China and received his Bachelor of Science in 1968. He then went to the University of Wisconsin–Madison and undertook M.Sc and a Ph.D work under the supervision of Clifford Taubes; but he did not complete it when interrupted by his obligatory alternative service in Germany. He received his Ph.D. (D.Phil.) at Bochum in 1984, under the supervision of Carl-Wilhelm de Boor.

He is a professor of mathematics at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Alberta.
