Born in Woodford, County Galway, Flynn first played competitive hurling in his youth. He enjoyed Connacht success at colleges level with Mercy College. At club level he plays with Tommy Larkin's.
Flynn made his debut on the inter-county scene at the age of fifteen when he first linked up with the Galway minor team. An All-Ireland medallist in this grade, he later joined the under-21 side. Flynn joined the extended senior panel during the 2013 league.

Inter-county
Flynn made his minor debut for Galway on 25 July 2010 in a 1-15 to 2-8 All-Ireland quarter-final defeat of Waterford. After enjoying little success in his first year with the team, Galway reached the All-Ireland decider the following year where they played Dublin. A 1-9 tally from team captain Shane Maloney helped Galway to a 1-21 to 1-12 victory, with Flynn winning an All-Ireland Minor Hurling Championship medal.
After enjoying little success with the Galway under-21 team, Flynn made his senior debut in a 0-28 to 1-12 National Hurling League defeat of Dublin on 16 February 2014.
On 3 September 2017, Flynn came on as a substitute for Galway in the second half and scored two points as they won their first All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship in 29 years against Waterford.
