Uthoff committed to the University of Wisconsin, where he sat out the 2011–12 season as a redshirt. He decided to transfer following the season, but his case received national press as Wisconsin coach Bo Ryan originally barred the player from transferring to 26 different schools. After heavy public scrutiny, Ryan reduced his restrictions to only cover the Big Ten Conference. Uthoff ultimately chose Iowa, a Big Ten school, opting to pay his own way in the 2012–13 season as he sat out the year as a transfer per NCAA regulations.
