Biography

Knowlton was born in Canandaigua, New York in 1813. He moved to Janesville, Wisconsin in the 1830s. After moving to Shullsburg, Wisconsin in 1847, Knowlton moved back to Janesville in 1856. He died in 1879.

Knowlton's brother, Wiram, was a Justice of the Wisconsin Supreme Court.

Knowlton was admitted to the bar while living in Shullsburg. While there, he also served as a Lafayette County, Wisconsin Judge. In 1853, Knowlton was a member of the legal team of Levi Hubbell during his impeachment trial. Later, he represented Coles Bashford in 1856 when he successfully contested the election of William A. Barstow as Governor of Wisconsin.

Political career

Initially a Whig and later a Republican, Knowlton was a member of the Wisconsin State Assembly in 1854, 1856 and 1858. He was also an unsuccessful candidate for the Wisconsin Supreme Court in 1862.
