James Arthur (born in New Haven, Connecticut in 1974) is an American poet. He grew up in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and undertook his graduate work at the University of Washington in Seattle and the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton.

Arthur’s poems have appeared in The New Yorker, The New Republic, Poetry, Ploughshares, and The American Poetry Review. Other honors include a Stegner Fellowship, the Amy Lowell Travelling Poetry Scholarship, and the Discovery/The Nation Prize.
Arthur's debut book Charms Against Lightning was published in 2012 by Copper Canyon Press. It was a 2012 Lannan Literary Selection, and a shortlisted nominee for the Canadian Gerald Lampert Award.
Arthur lives in Baltimore, Maryland and is an assistant professor in the Writing Seminars at Johns Hopkins University.
