[Exclusive interview] GOT7 JUS2 with Korean Unnie


Im Jae-bum (Hangul: 임재범; Japanese: イム·ジェボム; Chinese: 林在範; born January 6, 1994) commonly known by his stage name JB (Hangul: 제이비), is a South Korean singer, songwriter, actor, and MC. He is the leader and lead vocalist of South Korean boyband Got7, and member of the duo JJ Project. He is also a producer under the name Def Soul. JB made his acting debut in a small role of a backup dancer in the hit KBS drama Dream High in 2011, before returning to star as the main character JB/Jang Woo-jae in its spin-off, Dream High 2, in 2012. He has also starred in MBC's When a Man Falls in Love as Seo-Min Joon, and Naver TVCast's Dream Knight as himself.

2009–2014: Debut and career beginnings

JB, along with fellow Got7 member Jinyoung, successfully auditioned for JYP Entertainment in 2009, winning first place at the open audition. This was after being discovered in a bathroom by J.Y. Park, in a similar fashion to that of Miss A's Suzy. JB was given the stage name "JB" due to his sharing the same name with Yim Jae-beom, a famous senior singer.

In 2011, JB was cast in the role of JB/Jang Woo-jae in the television drama Dream High 2. In a press conference for the drama, he described his experience by saying, "It is an honor to be part of such a large project as Dream High 2. Although I was very nervous at the beginning, I was determined to work hard to improve. My friends and fellow cast mates on the show have helped me a lot, and I am very happy." The drama began airing on January 30, 2012 on KBS for 16 episodes.

In May 2012, JB and fellow trainee Jinyoung debuted as the duo JJ Project with the single album Bounce. Their official music video for title track "Bounce" was released on May 19, and the duo began promotions for "Bounce" on M! Countdown on May 24. JB appeared on the first season of tvN's variety show The Romantic & Idol, finally pairing mutually with Rainbow's Seungah.

On March 11, 2013, it was announced that JB would be appearing as Ddol-yi on MBC's new drama When a Man Falls in Love. His bandmate Jinyoung also had a role in the drama, which aired for twenty episodes beginning April 3. On December 24, 2013, the two members of JJ Project debuted as part of a 7-member boy band called Got7, becoming the leader of the group. Got7 released their debut MV “Girls Girls Girls” on January 15, 2014. The group dropped their first EP Got It? on January 20, 2014 with successful charting and sales. JB also participates in composing and songwriting for Got7 under the pen name, Def Soul.

In addition to his activities as a member of Got7, JB has starred in various dramas and TV programs, and continues to compose. Both he and Jinyoung have said that work as the JJ Project is possible in the future.

JB played the lead role in Dream Knight, a virtual musical television drama, as a superhero version of himself, alongside his fellow Got7 members. The drama was released in 2015 from January 27 through March 5. For his performance, he was nominated for Best New Actor at the 2015 KWEB 1st Fest.

GOT7

Got7 is a popular South Korean boys' band formed back in 2014 by Korea's well-known music label JYP Entertainment. The band is composed of seven members including rappers and lead vocalists. The young group consists of JB, Mark, Jackson, Jinyoung, Youngjae, BamBam, and Yugyeom. Got7 made their big debut in January 2014 with the release of their first Extended Play song titled 'Got It?'. The song turned the fortunes of the young band members of GOT 7 as it soon became a chartbuster around the world.The song rose to number two position on the Gaon Album Chart and peaked to number one on Billboard's World Albums Chart. The group's talented singers then skyrocketed to fame with their stellar stage performances. Apart from world-class music, their performances also included elements of "Martial Arts Tricking" a technique that helped them stand out from the other bands in the world of music.

GOT 7 achieved another milestone in late 2014 when they signed a contract with Sony Music Entertainment Japan. With this, the band ventured in to the Japanese music market. They released their debut Japanese language single "Around the World" in early 2015 with Sony Music. After having a successful song release in Japan, the members of the band returned to South Korea a month later. They then released their very first full-length studio album titled 'Identify' which once again topped the nation's music charts.

Got7 went on to release chartbusters one after the other. In 2015, they released two more singles titled 'Just Right and Mad' as a part of their Extended Play. Both the songs became Got 7's most commercially successful singles until then. In 2016, GOT 7 released their first full-length Japanese studio album, Moriagatteyo. The album made them make their way on the Oricon Albums Chart for the first time ever. They sealed the third position on the chart.

These songs were followed by back to EP editions. Got 7's fifth Korean EP Flight Log: Departure and their second full-length studio album Flight Log: Turbulence, both chart-toppers in the year 2016. Got7 released their sixth EP Flight Log: Arrival, featuring the single "Never Ever" in 2017. 'Arrival' is the third and final part of the group's Flight Log series. It was also Got 7's best selling album with more than 300,000 copies sold.

2017 was a highly productive year for Got 7 as they had also released their seventh EP, 7 for 7, featuring the chartbuster single "You Are", and just like other two albums this one too was sold over 300,000 times. They released their eighth EP, "Eyes On You" on in 2018. Over 300,000 copies of this album have been sold until now making it another hit for Got 7. GOT 7 led by JB has still has its core team of vocalist and rappers intact.

GOT7 members & their relation with JB 

Got 7 is led by JB. Ever since the band was formed in 2014, the members of the team share a cordial, friendly relationship with each other. No reports or even rumors for that matter have ever surfaced about fallout or spat between the band members. All the members reportedly lived together in an apartment and used to practice at their dorm nearby. After staying together for almost five years, they have moved out in their own apartments recently.

Some facts about each member of Got 7 Boy Band

JB: JB, the lead vocalist of Got 7 had an alcoholic father. His mother divorced him when JB was young and married another man. But JB now has a happy family. He also mentioned about his cordial relationship with his stepfather in an interview.

MARK: Mark is a rapper in the band. He has an elder sister who is married to a girl. He allegedly has a huge cross tattoo on his leg.

JACKSON: Jackson was a bright child and he had also earned a scholarship to a popular university in the UK but he refused to join it and chose to debut with GOT7 in 2014 instead. He also has a brother in Australia. He is the CEO of his music label Team Wang in China.

JINYOUNG: Jinyoung is an actor and the very first person to have been chosen as a Got 7's member alongside JB in 2009. He made his music debut with Jb in JJ Project before joining Got 7. JB had suggested Jinyoung's name as the band leader earlier.

YOUNGJAE: Youngjae is the lead vocalist of Got 7 and lives with GOT7s Dog Coco together.

BAMBAM: Bambam is the lead rapper of Got 7. He had auditioned in JYP because his mother was a big fan of RAIN who was at this time a part of JYP. He was chosen on the basis of his phenomenal dancing skills. He has also been a part of a dancing “club” with Blackpinks Lisa.

YUGYEOM: He is a vocalist of Got 7. He was born in South Korea but brought up in Saudi Arabia as his father worked there. He had also won a dancing competition 'Hit the stage' before joining Got 7.

Songwriting Skills of JB

JB composed "나쁜 짓 (Bad Behavior)" for the album "GOT ♡" in 2014. In 2015, he wrote the rap to "Mine" in "Just Right". He also composed "매일 (Everyday)" for the album ''MAD Winter Edition'' together with 조울 of 프린세스디지즈 [Cho Wool of Princess Disease] in the same year. In 2016, he wrote the lyrics to "Something Good", "Fish" and "Home Run" in "Flight Log: Departure". He also wrote the lyrics for "Skyway", "Prove It" and ""니꿈꿔" (Dreamin')" for the album "Flight Log: Turbulence".

JB's Singing Skills

JB auditioned at JYP Entertainment which is a popular record label in South Korea at the age of 15 in 2009. He stood at number one position in the competition along with his friend and fellow Got 7 band member Jinyoung. Though he had bagged his debut role in TV serial Dream High in 2011, he made his singing debut with Jinyoung in JJ Project. He hit to fame with his single music video alongside Jiyoung titled 'Bounce'. The duo went on to become the first members to be chosen for the boy band, 'Got 7'. He has showcased his singing skills in his musical TV show Dream High.

JB is the second strongest vocalist in the Got 7 band with a vocal range of 3 octaves and 3 notes. His voice type is 'tenor' with a good sense of breath support and falsetto transitions. He is usually seen taking up songs from Hip-hop, K-pop, Trap and R&B genre.

JB's Role in Dream High 

JB portrayed the role of an aspiring singer, Jang Woo Jae (JB)  in the musical high school drama Dream High. He has only one dream since childhood - to become a top star. He had promised his ailing father before his death that he would surely make it to the top and become a superstar in the field of music. As JB enters Kirin Arts High School, he initially is seen as an egoistic person who is bothered about nothing but becoming a star. But his life turns upside down when he meets Hyesung in the school. She makes him rethink about his dreams and passion and he eventually falls in love with her, so much that the rigid minded JB becomes ready to give up on his future to make Hyesung dreams come true. JB has a love-hate kind of relationship with the show's male lead and an aspiring rockstar Yoo Jin. As the series progresses, their bond strengthens and JB eventually becomes a music producer.

JB's Role in Dream Knight 

Dream Knight is a fun, romantic drama that features all the seven boys from Got 7 in the lead. JB portrays the role of a die-hard romantic who can turn into a batman and uses downright romantic lines to please his lady love. JB falls in love with a girl who had lost her mother at a young age. She had a sad and depressive childhood but fortunes turn in her favor as she meets her 'knight' JB in the show. He has also shown off his superb dancing skills in the show. His dance-off with a fellow band member in one of the episodes was quite impressive!

JB got his first breakthrough by one of the most popular music labels of South Korea, the JYP Entertainment in 2009. He kick-started his journey in the K-pop industry in 2009 after winning the competition organized by JYP Entertainment. Ever since there's no looking back for the young star. From TV shows like Dream High and Dream Knight to regular concerts and music albums, JB has been giving his best in the field of music, dance, and acting. He has a number of chartbusters like 'Bounce', 'You Are' among others to his name. His noteworthy contribution to the K-pop industry has made him reach on the top of the billboard worldwide.

Personal life and other Interests

JB's favourite artists and musical inspirations are Michael Jackson, India Arie, D'Angelo, Javier, and Bruno Mars. He identifies as Christian. JB can speak some Japanese.

On September 12 of 2014 he was involved in a minor car accident. Reports said the vehicle transporting JB, his manager, and his stylist was trying to change lanes to avoid a parked car when a bus came up behind, causing their car to hit a van. Neither JB nor his staff suffered major damage.

In 2016, JB was unable to participate in several Got7's Fly Tour concerts and a M!Countdown performance due to a spinal disc injury. He discovered he had an issue with his spinal disc after being diagnosed, having gone to the hospital on April 27 during a concert rehearsal after experiencing severe back pains. He returned to the stage for Fly in Singapore concert at the Suntec Singapore Convention & Exhibition Centre, showing a full recovery.

He is currently majoring in Film at Konkuk University.

They have time and again gone shirtless for the fans and boasted off their chiseled abs during shows and concerts.
