The International University in Moscow was established in 1991 by Mikhail Gorbachev and President George H. W. Bush, and was the first private university in Russia.

In August 1991, President of the U.S. Mikhail Gorbachev and President Bush launched a joint educational project: a Soviet-American University, which in documents signed later by Boris Yeltsin, the first President of Russia, was named the International University in Moscow.
The president of the University, Gavriil Kharitonovich Popov, is a well-known Russian economist, a prominent politician, and the first Mayor of Moscow. The Rector of the University, Sergey N. Krasavchenko, is a renowned economist and politician, 1990-1999 member of the Presidium of the Supreme Council of the Russian Federation, first deputy head of the presidential administration and advisor to the Russian President.
The university's main campus is located at 17 Leningradsky Prospect in central Moscow.
Mission
The mission of the University is to train highly qualified specialists who are able to work in today’s national and international business environment. IUM is liberal in orientation. Among its basic principles are democracy, human and multicultural values, focus on the modern world, comprehensive training, and care and attention to students. IUM also supports a superior quality of teaching. Among its lecturers there are renowned academics, qualified professors and specialists, and recognized visiting international professors. The most effective and advanced methods of teaching are applied. The university has solid partnerships with several educational institutions abroad. Currently about one in every eight students is international. Regular conferences, seminars and round tables at IUM bring up new ideas and develop creative thinking and thus improve both teaching and research activity.
