Inistioge (/ɪnɪʃˈtɡ/; Irish: Inis Tíog) is a small scenic village in County Kilkenny, Ireland. It is situated on the River Nore, 25 kilometres (16 mi) southeast of Kilkenny. Historically, the name has been spelt as Ennistioge, Ennisteage, and in other ways.

Inistioge has been the scene for a number of films, most notably Circle of Friends and Widows' Peak. The picturesque Woodstock Estate is located one mile (1.6 km) outside the village. Inistioge is one of several villages that are situated along the River Nore not far from the Town of Kilkenny, Ireland. The Town is entered by crossing a beautiful 10 arch stone bridge, includes a tree-lined square and rows of 18th and 19th century homes along the river.

Bus

The main bus route serving the village is Kilbride Coaches' New Ross - Thomastown - Kilkenny route. There are two journeys each way daily but none on Sundays. The first journey arrives into Kilkenny at 08.30 and the last return journey is at 18.00 making commuting possible. On Thursdays Bus Éireann route 374 provides a journey in each direction along the New Ross - Thomastown - Kilkenny route. Bus Éireann and JJ Kavanagh and Sons operate numerous journeys daily from Thomastown (8.5 kilometres away) to Dublin, Dublin Airport, Carlow and Waterford. Bus services to Rosslare Europort are available from New Ross.

Rail

The nearest station is Thomastown railway station on the Waterford-Kilkenny-Dublin line. It is nine kilometres distant.

History

The earliest recorded reference to Inistioge refers to a battle between the kingdom of Osraighi and an army of Norse, recorded as taking place in the year AD 962 in the Annals of the Four Masters.

Inistioge was previously a borough, sending two members to the Irish House of Commons.

Sport

The well-known Gaelic Athletic Association club Rower-Inistioge GAA has its home ground here. The club has had many All Ireland medal-winning players including Eddie Keher, Sean Cummins, Kieran Joyce and Liam Tierney.

Notable people

George Brown, Manchester based communist and member of the International Brigades in the Spanish Civil War was born at Ballyneale outside Inistioge in 1906. He was killed in the Battle of Brunete, Spain in 1937. An annual George Brown memorial weekend has been held in Inistioge since 2008. Nora Sands, of Jamie's School Dinners fame, is a native.

Lieutenant Walter R.P. Hamilton V.C., leader of the Guides at the Residency in Kabul, who was killed during the Second Anglo-Afghan War, came from here.
