Interview with ingenu ceo john horn at lpwa americas

Ingenu is a leading provider of machine-exclusive wireless networks via both the public Machine Network™ and also private networks for multiple vertical markets. Ingenu's networks are based on proprietary RPMA (Random Phase Multiple Access) technology which allow for greater coverage per access point, more robust communication technology, and industry leading network longevity. Ingenu focuses on machine to machine (M2M) communication by enabling devices to become Internet of Things (IoT) devices. Ingenu provides the entire stack of wireless connectivity, including RPMA radio modules, RPMA wireless access points, and other associated hardware and software.

Introducing ingenu

History

Ingenu was formerly known as On-Ramp Wireless and re-branded in September 2015. Ingenu, through its CEO John Horn, announced its rebranding at the CTIA 2015 conference. Initially the company focused on utilities, but in 2012 expanded to the gas and oil verticals. The Ingenu brand launch in September 2015 coincided with the announcement of the Machine Network, Ingenu's public network dedicated to machine connectivity.

Company

Ingenu offers machine-to-machine (M2M) connectivity in the form of private networks and the public Machine Network. Ingenu has 38 private networks, in over 20 countries. These private networks consist of digital oilfields, smart grid, smart city, and other utilities.

The company has operations in 20 countries and employs 130 people around the world.

Leadership

Ingenu's leadership includes CEO John Horn, previous president of RacoWireless, which was acquired by Kore Telematics. Prior to RacoWireless, John was the director of T-Mobile's M2M team. Ingenu's board of directors includes Qualcomm co-founder Dr. Andrew Viterbi, former CEO of Verizon Communications Ivan Seidenberg with chairman of the board Richard Lynch, former CTO of Verizon Communications. Other leaders include Tom Gregor as the president and general manager, Landon Garner as chief marketing officer, and James Seines as vice president of finance.

Technology

Ingenu owns RPMA, holding 32 patents and utilizes it for all its network build outs. RPMA is used in GE's AMI metering. RPMA is also used for oil and gas field automation, or digital oilfield. The technology includes network appliances, the microNode radio module, a reference Application Communication Module for development platform, and a general I/O device.

The Machine Network

In September 2015, Ingenu announced a buildout of "the Machine Network", a public network exclusively for machines supported by RPMA technology. The network will begin in the US, and as of the launch had 55,000 square miles. The company plans to cover Phoenix and Dallas by the end of 2015 with coverage across the United States complete by the end of 2017. The Machine Network also has coverage in Europe starting with nationwide coverage of Italy, through a partnership with Meterlinq.

Private Networks

Ingenu has 38 private, regional, machine-to-machine networks globally covering 60,000 square miles of territory. One of these networks is owned by San Diego Gas & Electric. At the announcement of the Machine Network, Ingenu indicated it would continue to support and pursue private networks.

Recognition

Ingenu, while still On-Ramp Wireless, has received many awards. Most recently it was nominated for the 2015 Spiffy Award for the Edison Award for Most Innovative Startup. Other recognitions include:

  • 2014 M2M Evolution Product of the Year Award
  • 2013 The Fierce Innovation Awards: Energy Edition Winner, Communications
