Profiles

Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIM Ahmedabad or IIMA) is a public business school located in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India. It was the second Indian Institute of Management (IIM) to be established, after IIM Calcutta. It is the "world’s toughest business school to get into", on the basis of its acceptance rate (0.25%). It is consistently ranked as one of the leading business schools in India and the Asia-Pacific region.

Contents

Established in 1961, the institute offers Post Graduate Diploma Programmes in Management and Agri-Business Management, a Fellowship Programme and a number of Executive Training Programmes. The institute is often referred to as WIMWI (Well-known Institute of Management in Western India). The Institute's first Director was the Indian physicist Vikram Sarabhai. The Director as of 2016 is Ashish Nanda.

History

IIM Ahmedabad was established on 11 December 1961 with the active support of the Government of India, the Government of Gujarat, Harvard Business School, and prominent members of Indian industry. The physicist Vikram Sarabhai and businessman Kasturbhai Lalbhai, both natives of Ahmedabad, played pivotal roles in setting up the institute. The institute's Kasturbhai Lalbhai Management Development Centre and a Kasturbhai Lalbhai Chair in Entrepreneurship are named in his honour. The management educator Ravi J. Matthai and several other Ahmedabad-based industrialists also played a major role in its creation.

The 1960s was a period when a course of management was not fully understood or appreciated by Indian industry. Initially, the institute faced difficulties in getting quality students in large numbers and convincing companies to hire these candidates. However, with time, as the leadership of major business houses changed, this mindset changed as well. The rise of IIMA graduates to top positions in businesses also improved the perception of IIMA. Today, it is one of the most difficult educational institutes in the world to get entry into.

Campus

The IIMA campus is situated across 106 acres in Vastrapur, Ahmedabad. The campus houses the academic blocks, faculty offices, student and faculty accommodation, the Dr. Vikram Sarabhai Library, the R.J. Mathai Auditorium, the Louis Kahn Plaza, the International Management Development Centre, the Kasturbhai Lalbhai Management Development Centre, the Centre for Innovation, Incubation and Entrepreneurship, sport facilities, several food outlets and merchandise stores.

Architecture

In 1962, the IIMA board came to a formal agreement with the National Institute of Design (NID) for the latter to undertake the task of designing the IIM Ahmedabad campus. The National Institute for Design appointed American architect Louis Kahn and B.V. Doshi as architects for the project. Kahn worked on the IIMA project from 1962 until his death in 1974.

Kahn's architecture is characterized by the use of exposed red bricks, the extensive use of geometric shapes in hostels and academic blocks and vast corridors outside the classrooms. A number of tourists and architecture students visit the campus every year. The quadrangle between the main academic building and the classroom complex in the Heritage Campus is an open-air assembly named after Kahn and called the Louis Kahn Plaza.

IIMA announced an architectural competition for the extension of its campus in 1999, and the project was awarded to the Indian firm HCPDPM and architect Bimal Patel. This new campus was built on a plot across the road from the Heritage Campus. The two campuses are connected by an underpass, which houses an exhibition on Louis Kahn’s work.

Dr. Vikram Sarabhai Library

The library is named after the institute’s founder, renowned physicist Vikram Sarabhai. The library was instituted in 1962 and has one of the biggest collection of management books and databases in Asia. It houses over 193000 books and has online subscriptions to greater than 24000 journals. The library provides access to 100+ digital databases relating to scholarly, company and industry information to the IIMA community. The library is located at the Louis Kahn Plaza. The main building is currently undergoing renovation and has been temporarily shifted to KLMDC. TCS Foundation, the nonprofit arm of Tata Consultancy Services, is providing Rs 20 crore for the project, which has a projected completion date of 2018. The reimagined Library will focus on intelligent identification technologies, enhancing the library's digital content and seamless integration of the library's resources.

Student accommodation

Students are provided single room accommodation in the 33 fully furnished dormitories spread across the campus. Married students can opt to live with their family in married students' hostels. Stay in dormitories is mandatory for students. Basic amenities including washing machines, refrigerators and TVs are available at each dorm. The architecture of the dormitories promotes sociability among the residents.

Programmes

Like other IIMs, IIM Ahmedabad currently offers diplomas in management, not degrees. However, the Cabinet of the Government of India approved the IIM Bill in January 2017 which when approved will allow the IIMs to offer MBA degrees instead of diplomas.

  • Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGP): IIMA's flagship programme, the PGP is a two year full time residential management programme. Admissions to PGP are primarily through the Common Admission Test conducted jointly by the IIMs. Of the 173,866 applications received for PGP for the 2012-14 batch, the Institute admitted 381 students, making it one of the world's toughest programmes to get admitted to. Its main objective is to "develop young men and women into competent professional managers, capable of working in any sector of organized activity, proceeding leadership and achieving excellence in performance while contributing to the welfare of the larger society." Students admitted to the programme comprise a little over 20% fresh graduates with the rest having work experience across the public sector, consulting, IT and IT services, industrial goods and finance.
  • Post Graduate Programme in Food and Agribusiness Management (PGP-FABM): The Programme has been ranked as the best food and agribusiness programme in the world by Eduniversal Best Masters ranking. The programme has been constantly evolving, starting as a special program in Agriculture (SPA) in 1974, becoming a Post Graduate Program in Agri Business Management (PGP-ABM) to a Post Graduate Program in Food & Agri Business Management (PGP-FABM) in 2014.
  • Post Graduate Programme in Management for Executives (PGPX): The PGPX is a one-year full-time programme residential for executives with substantial work experience. The programme allows students to bridge the gap between their current skill level and the desired skill level and provide an opportunity for them to make a career shift. Students are admitted to the programme through the GMAT. The 90 students admitted to the batch of 2017 have an average GMAT score of 710 and an average work experience of 8.5 years. Students have experience across industries like education, manufacturing engineering, healthcare, infrastructure, defense, energy, government, financial services, retail, management consultancy, telecom, IT & IT Services and shipping.
  • Fellow Programme in Management (FPM): The doctoral programme of IIMA, FPM seeks to "provide students with necessary skills to identify and research complex issues in the field of management.". FPM students typically spend a little over four years at the Institute, including 2 years of course-work. Students admitted to FPM receive a comprehensive fellowship which covers all costs of education in addition to an allowance for living expenses. A total of 305 students have graduated from the programme to date.
  • Armed Forces Programme (AFP): The AFP is a six-month full-time business management course designed to equip officers of India's armed forces with contemporary management skills through IIMA's time tested pedagogy.
  • Exchange Programmes: IIMA has affiliations with 78 leading business schools across the world. In 2015-16, 140 students from IIMA spent a semester at affiliate business schools across North America, Europe, Africa, Australia and the Asia Pacific region, while 87 students from foreign colleges spent a semester at IIMA for the same period. The Institute has a Dual Degree programme arrangement with a few business schools such as HEC Paris, University of Bocconi, ESSEC Paris, University of Cologne and ESCP Europe. Some of the students going on exchange receive scholarships from the Institute, DAAD Germany, the French Government and participating schools.
  • In addition to the above, the Institute conducts a number of executive education and faculty development programmes through the year. In January 2017, IIMA launched India's first online management course with the two year e-Post Graduate Programme in Management for working executives and entrepreneurs.

Centre for Innovation, Incubation and Entrepreneurship (CIIE)

Centre for Innovation, Incubation and Entrepreneurship (CIIE) is a research centre started in 2002 by faculty members of IIM Ahmedabad. It was later repurposed as an incubator with partnership with the Government of India and Government of Gujarat. In 2014, CIIE emerged as the #1 accelerator in the Asia and Oceania region by quantum of funding to young startups. The CIIE also runs the Mavericks Programme for students of IIMA.

    The Mavericks Programme

Students in the first year batch at IIM Ahmedabad also have the opportunity to work under the CIIE, to build upon their entrepreneurial ideas during the summers, instead of doing an internship. 5 students from Class of 2018 opted out of summer placement process to work on their own ventures under the guidance and mentorship of CIIE. Students interested in starting their own ventures after completing their course at IIMA can do so under the guidance and mentorship of CIIE, and can opt to participate in placements in one of the next two years in the event that their venture does not work out. From the batch of 2016, eight students opted out of the placement process to work on their startups in sectors like adventure tourism, data analytics, e-commerce, food processing among others.

    Impact

    Business

IIMA has been instrumental in influencing the business landscape of the country, with the highest proportion of BSE 500 CEOs (who have an MBA) coming from IIMA. More than 400 students provide live consulting for businesses through the Forum for Industry Interaction annually. 84 projects were undertaken by students in 2015.

    Policy

A key study by IIMA on salaries in the private and public sector helped shape the 7th Central Pay Commission’s recommendations. Professors from IIMA have been appointed to eminent panels and committees, responsible for shaping key policies, by the government. IIMA’s Gold Policy Centre is in the process of publishing a paper on the government’s Gold Monetization Policy. The Punjab Prisons Department has signed an MoU with IIMA for a prison modernization project. The Central Vigilance Commission has asked IIMA to come up with India’s first index to measure perceptions of graft and corruption, based on the Corruption Perceptions Index of Transparency International. Key studies on state health indexes have also been released by IIMA, helping to highlight the progress made on the same by various states across the country.

    Training

Through its Executive Education programs, IIMA will train key senior officers from Chattisgarh, as well as state Chief Minister Raman Singh, focussing on key management practices and project management. Officers from the Delhi Jal Board will also undergo training on Project and Risk Management. An MoU has also been signed between the institute and the Delhi Govt to train the principals of all 1024 schools run by it, with the training to be conducted by the RTE Resource Centre.

    Social

RTE-RC: The Right to Education Resource Centre (RTE-RC), started by a group of students under the guidance of Prof. Ankur Sarin, helps parents fill out forms and get children admitted under the RTE Act, while also raising awareness about the issue of underutilization of the Act. The Centre received 1800 application in its first year of operation, raising the number of children admitted under RTE from 30 in 2013 to nearly 600 in 2014.

Prayaas: Launched in 2004, Prayaas impacts the lives underprivileged students by directly providing them a higher quality of education through specially appointed teachers, with classes running out of the New Campus, as also through funding drives that enable students to move to better schools, in a hope for better education and better lives. The IIMA community actively helps the children with their homework and preparation for examinations. Additionally, the children use the campus' facilities and participate in activities like painting, dance, crafts, etc.

SMILE: IIMA, in association with the Wagh Bakri Group, set up an initiative called SMILE (Student Mediated Initiative for Learning to Excel) to educate underprivileged kids wherein students will conduct classes in their free time. This has been piloted in a space provided by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) under a flyover near the IIM-A campus.

IIM Ahmedabad has been cast as the background for several books. “Stay Hungry Stay Foolish” is a book by the Indian non-fiction author Rashmi Bansal (an IIMA alumnus). It features stories of 25 IIMA alumni who left lucrative jobs to pursue entrepreneurship. The book created a new record in Indian publishing by selling over 300,000 copies and has been translated into eight languages.

The campus was the backdrop for the popular Bollywood movie 2 States, based on a book of the same name authored by Chetan Bhagat, an alumnus. The film is a romantic story, set in IIMA, of a Punjabi boy who falls in love with a Tamil girl, and the ensuing cultural clash between them and their families. The film was a box office hit and grossed over Rs. 1.7 billion in revenues.
