Born in Beaverton, Oregon.

His parents are Ivan and Sue Karmel.

He trained with comedy troupes The Groundlings and Upright Citizens Brigade.

Ian hosts the all "All Fantasy Everything" podcast with friends of the podcast, David Gborie and Sean Jordan on the Headgum network.
As a writer and roundtable regular on E!’s Chelsea Lately, he often refers to the show as a stepping stone, citing the time Arby's sent him a gift card.
He has also appeared on the talk show Conan, season two of Adam DeVine's House Party, Portlandia and the Travel Channel’s Best Sandwich in America, as well as a post-game analyst and commentator for the Portland Trail Blazers.
