On March 23, 2015, it was announced that Joe Kelly and Ken Niimura's graphic novel I Kill Giants was being adapted into a live-action feature film, which Kelly would write the screenplay for the film. Chris Columbus came on board to produce the film through his 1492 Pictures and Ocean Blue Entertainment, along with Treehouse Pictures, Man of Action Entertainment, and XYZ Films. Treehouse would fully finance the film, while XYZ would handle the international sales. Anders Walter would make his feature film directing debut.
On September 11, 2015, Zoe Saldana and Madison Wolfe joined the film, in which Wolfe would play Barbara, a young misfit girl battling both internal and external monsters in her life, while Saldana would play Mrs. Mollé, a school psychologist. Wolfe was cast in the film after a search through 500 actors. On September 10, 2016, Imogen Poots was confirmed to star in the film.
Principal photography on the film began on September 27, 2016.
