Hum Dono (Hindi: हम दोनों; Urdu: ہم دونوں‎; Both of Us) is a 1961 Hindi film produced by Dev Anand and Navketan films. Amarjeet is credited as the film's director, but producer and star Dev Anand claimed that it was his brother Vijay Anand, who directed the film, based on his own script. The film stars Dev Anand in a double role, and also has Nanda, Sadhana Shivdasani and Leela Chitnis. It has been relaunched in colour after exactly 50 years on 4 February 2011. The film is also known for its music by Jaidev and became a box office hit. The film was remade in Telugu as Ramuni Mechina Ramudu with N. T. Rama Rao.

Plot summary

Mahesh Anand is happy go lucky guy and falls in love with rich girl,Meeta. Meeta conveys the same to her father who insults Anand saying that he doesn't have money to feed her daughter. Anand takes it personally and on the way back to home he finds the poster of Indian Army and he joins it much to the displeasure of his mother. Meeta unknown of what happened between her father and anand visits his home and comes to know about anand joining army. she tells his mother that she loved anand to the core and hence being future daughter-in-law she will take care of anand's mother though she disapproves of it. Anand gets trained and is posted in the war Zone. Meeta makes sure that anand is not known about her presence at his home and religiously takes care of his mother. One day while returning to the camp anand finds a vallet of a jawan and reaches the camp to return it. To his astonishment the vallet belongs to major verma who is just like him(with moustache) and they share some light moments with major sharing about his personal life, his wife Ruma and his mother. as the fate has Major verma is deemed dead in the war and a telegram is sent to his family saying that they are unable to trace Major.

Anand gets promoted for his heroic acts and returns home to find meeta there and his mother dead. He envisions that what verma's family must be going through not able to find his trace. He decides to break the news of his death personally and starts to travel to their home. Upon seeing him. Major's mother just hugs him and seeing her happiness he is not able to break the news and Ruma too is happy. but anand is not able cope with Ruma's closeness to him and distances her which pains Ruma and questions him for it. As destiny has it, it is shown Major is alive but he has lost one of his limbs and is returning home. upon reaching home he finds anand in his place and misjudges him as the one who is taking advantage of his wife Ruma, but anand rubbishes it and says he is merely playing his part to keep his family happy while his own personal life is in shambles(it is shown Meeta is suspecting anand of an affair and decides to leave him for a new life).

He says that he can prove Ruma loves him even after is handicap and asks him to come to a temple and says the same to meeta. There he brings Ruma and asks that if he becomes handicap will she leave him. to that she replies that she is his arthaangini(half part) and how can she leave him seeing her own part is in shambles.

Listening to this Major comes out of his hideout and reveals himself. Ruma hugs and takes him while meeta seeing anand's love decides against parting ways with him.

Film ends in a happy note!
