It is the only genus of the subfamily Heterochromidinae, and contains a single species, Heterochromis multidens, which is endemic to the Congo River Basin in Central Africa. This species is likely more closely related to cichlids from the Americas rather than other African cichlids. It can reach a total length of 29.5 cm (11.6 in).
