Early life

Helen was born in Leicester, Leicestershire, to Timothy and Jill (Drinkwater) Rupp.

Aged 10 she started entering ABRSM Piano exams, getting to Grade 4 in the space of two years.

During her time at high school (Bushloe High School) she started engaging with the community, joining the orchestra and choir etc.

Upon moving up to College (Guthlaxton College) she took a risk in opting for "Express Music" (A speed Music GCSE done in one year rather than two) but surprisingly achieved an "A" having achieved 100% in two sectors, one being composition. Despite this, Music still took the back seat in her life, herself not actually knowing what she might be doing in the future. It wasn't until 2013 that things started to take shape...

2013-(Present)

The second year of Helen's GCSEs (Year 11) was a game changer in her musical direction. Helen was pulled out of the classroom lessons and basically left alone in the Music Tech room for the school year's music lessons.

During this time, using the music creating computer program: Sibelius (by Avid), she increased her compositional skill significantly. She discovered a passion for writing music as an unending flow of ideas kept her busy almost every day.

When her music teacher suggested she apply for a composition summer-school she was initially doubtful. Being not a big fan of "School", Helen was unsure she would find any enjoyment in the course. She also had issues accepting that she was good enough to apply.

During the 2013 Sound And Music Summer School she worked with renowned vocal group "Juice", writing a piece called "The Eulogy of a Country Bypass". The piece was based on a Roald Dahl poem (which in turn was based on another poem) and the idea of a busy motorway put into vocal context.

After this experience the quality in Helen's work just kept rising. The piece "The Mechanical Minion", written for the brief "Rise of the Machines" for the Edexcel Music Exams that year, opened up the gate to the madness that can been seen in her later works. She spent most of that school year writing music to enhance her own skill in doing so. This culminated in her second confirmed place at the Sound And Music Summer School.

During the 2014 SAM Summer School, Helen worked with the Purcell School Composition Teacher, Alison Cox, and her group of World Musicians (Anne Denholm, Jordan Black, Joe Chapman and Kuljit Bahmra). Instead of writing a "University worthy" piece of professional music (as her mother had suggested for portfolio purposes) she took things way out of the box writing a piece of theatrical music called "Lifting Ireland". The piece starts with the harpist being interrupted by an 'audience member' playing the spoons (originally done by clarinetist and composer: Lloyd Coleman) and ending with the clarinetist fainting.

Helen is currently studying Music at Middlesex University.

She is also Britain's youngest Theatrical/Comical Composer (2014)
