Gurdeep Pandher (Punjabi: ਗੁਰਦੀਪ ਪੰਧੇਰ) is a Canadian artist and author. He has published two books, a biography of Kalpana Chawla titled Among the Stars!: Life and Dreams of Kalpana Chawla, and a Punjabi book of poetry called Mitti De Ghar.. Early life

Pandher was born in Siahar, Punjab, India to a farming family. He wrote his first poem in sixth grade and, by tenth grade, his writing portfolio expanded to also include prose, a full novel, short stories, and plays. In his late teens, he began taking Bhangra dance lessons as a part of his Punjabi-Sikh culture. Pandher has a Masters in Public Administration from Panjab University in Chandigarh.

Career

Pandher moved to Canada in 2006 and lived in a variety of cities including Squamish, Vancouver, Saskatoon, North Battleford, Lloydminster and Edmonton. After he became a Canadian citizen in 2011, he moved to and settled in the Yukon in 2012.

For the purpose of promoting diversity and understanding, Pandher taught Mayor Dan Curtis of Whitehorse how to tie and wear a Sikh turban in December 2016. This was followed by a lesson in Bhangra dancing. The video of their meeting went viral and attracted over a million views on the first day before being re-published by national and international news networks. Collectively, 25 million people watched the video.

Pandher's work celebrated and promoted Canada's multiculturalism, cross-cultural friendship, eliminating racism, and bringing unity-in-diversity. According to Yahoo News, quoting Pandher, "We are one Canada, and we can bring people together and we can dance together. That's what multicultural is all about." Impressed by his work, the Mayor of Whitehorse, Dan Curtis, requested Pandher at the City Council Hall to declare "Whitehorse a diverse, wonderful and beautiful community." His work focusing on bringing communities different backgrounds together with arts made headlines in the Yukon press.

Books

Among the Stars!: Life and Dreams of Kalpana Chawla was written in English and published in 2004. It is the illustrated biography of Kalpana Chawla, the first NASA astronaut of Indian origin.

Mitti De Ghar was written in Punjabi and published in 2002. It is an anthology of poems and poetical-songs exploring emotional depth through the use of folkloric agricultural symbols and metaphors.
