Early life
Herman was raised by his mother Judy Herman. His father, now deceased, was born in Chicago and lived with actress Jayne Mansfield. As a teenager, Herman moved to Impington, a village just north of Cambridgeshire, England. He was offered a scholarship to Cambridge University where he studied theatre and modern drama. Herman, as a teen was already designing couture-type dresses and handbags. Inspired by his weekend trips to London, Herman immersed himself into the heart of England's fashion scene. It was at his home in Cambridge where he designed his first few bags, which ironically would later come to sell at the very stores that helped to influence his creative vision.
Career
The Greg Herman brand debuted in 1996 with the help of then friend and muse Rachel Rosenzweig aka Rachel Zoe and Jane Pratt - founder Jane Magazine. Herman attributes much of his initial success to Rachel who helped shepard the collections throughout the New York fashion scene-- introducing Herman to both buyers and editors at W Magazine, Cosmopolitan, and Vogue. In the years to follow, Herman created exclusive collections for Barneys New York, House of Fraser, Scoop, Henri Bendel, Harvey Nichols, Neiman Marcus and Isetan to name a few, thus becoming a global brand with showrooms in Los Angeles, New York, London, and Japan.
Often referred to as the 'gypsy' designer, Herman prefers the life of pickup trucks and country living to New York and Milan. His blending of unique materials, creative crafting of leather, and concentration on form and function helps to create fresh and timeless collections. Over the years, Herman helped pave the way for handbag designers and influenced others to take up careers in the field. In a recent interview with Yahoo, Herman was quoted in saying that “the core energy derived from design and fashion is vibrational and exciting. It lasts forever in the soul and spirit of the designer."
Now operated by CLGCO, like LVMH, CLGCO is a multinational leather and luxury goods conglomerate focusing on successful acquisition and integration of various well known luxury brands. With yearly sales in excess of one billion, CLGCO will expand the Greg Herman name into high-end furniture and home goods with Herman overseeing all collections.
