Gottlieb (German for "God's Love"; see also Amadeus (disambiguation), Bogomil, Theophil) is a German name that may be used as a surname or as a male given name. The name Gottlieb was created in the 17th century, in German speaking parts of Europe, as a product of the age of Pietism, as a way of naming young men with a religiously charged name. The name has been, however, attested from the 6th century in the Gothic Arezzo deed as 'Gudilub', normalized as 'Gudaliufs'.
