While preparing for the Lauberhorn race, Reinstadler encountered a loss of control upon approaching the finish S (German: Ziel-S), resulting in a high-speed collision with the safety nets. During the accident, one of his skis became ensnared. Consequently, Reinstadler sustained a pelvic fracture along with critical internal injuries, leading to severe bleeding of his organs onto the ski slope.
He died later the same night at a hospital in Interlaken.

Following Reinstadler's death the 1991 Lauberhorn race was canceled, and enhanced safety measures were implemented for the following year's race.
