Club career
Haywood was born in Coleorton, Leicestershire. He played for Whitwick Imperial and for Gresley Rovers before joining First Division club Birmingham as a professional in November 1928. He scored twice on his Birmingham debut, in a 3–0 defeat of Manchester City in December 1929, and proved an adequate deputy for England international Joe Bradford, but never established himself as a first-team regular. He went on to spend brief periods with Chesterfield and Southport in the Third Division North and for Cradley Heath in the Birmingham & District League before retiring in 1939. He died in Coalville, Leicestershire, in 1992 at the age of 85.
