Gan Kim Yong (simplified Chinese: 颜金勇; traditional Chinese: 顏金勇; pinyin: Yán Jīn Yǒng; Pe̍h-ōe-jī: Gân Kim-ióng; born 9 February 1959) is a Singaporean politician. A member of the governing People's Action Party (PAP), he has been Minister for Health since May 2011. He previously served as the Minister for Manpower from 2008 to 2011. He has been a Member of Parliament (MP) since 2001.

Gan began his career in the Singapore Civil Service at the Ministry of Trade and Industry and the Ministry of Home Affairs. He left the civil service for the private sector in 1989 and joined NatSteel Ltd. In 1996, he was made the Executive Vice-President of NatSteel and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of NatSteel Resorts International and NatSteel Properties. In 2005, he became the President and CEO of NatSteel.

Political career

Gan was elected a Member of Parliament (MP) for the Holland-Bukit Panjang Group Representation Constituency (Holland-Bukit Panjang GRC) in 2001.

At the 2006 general election, Gan moved to the Chua Chu Kang Single Member Constituency (Chua Chu Kang SMC) and defeated Steve Chia of the Singapore Democratic Alliance (SDA), winning 60.37% of the votes.

In 2008, Gan was made the Acting Minister for Manpower. He was made a full member of the Cabinet in 2009.

At the 2011 general election, Gan was part of the 5-candidate PAP team standing in the newly formed Chua Chu Kang Group Representation Constituency (into which his former ward was subsumed). The team won the election in the constituency with 61.20% of the votes. Gan continues to represent the Chua Chu Kang ward in Parliament.

At the 2015 general election, Gan was part of the 4-candidate PAP team standing in Chua Chu Kang Group Representation Constituency, which the team won the election in the constituency with 76.89% of the votes against People's Power Party (Singapore). Gan continues to represent the Chua Chu Kang ward in Parliament once again.

Following the 2 general elections (2011 & 2015), Gan was appointed the Minister for Health.

Education

Gan was educated at Catholic High School and National Junior College, before going on to the University of Cambridge on an Overseas Merit Scholarship, where he completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in Electrical Engineering (1981). In 1985, he obtained his master's degree from Cambridge University.

Religious activities

Gan currently serves as an elder at the Chen Li Presbyterian Church.
