Francisco Mejía-Guinand is New York based architect and visual artist who was born in Bogotá, Colombia in 1964. [1] He has spent his entire career, examining ideas of abstraction, expanded his spatial and temporal approach to sculpture. In his most recent work, developed in New York, he focuses primarily on arrangements of tetrahedrons systems, which highlight his interes in balance and the contrast between possitive and negative fractal space, explores the mathematical notion of self-similarity and the idea of multidimensional geometry. He is best known for his geometric sculptures based on Mathematics, Russian Avant-garde, Sacred Geometry and Origami principles. His work steadily incorporates a range of metals including bronze, aluminium,stainless steel, titanium, brass, cooper tubing and cast aluminium and precious metals. As a painter, he has remained dedicated to exploring the tradition of painting as an artistic medium. His large-scale densely layered abstract oil paintings, built up through layers of oil paint on canvas, overlaid with mark-making using charcoal. His paintings style displays the influences of Willem de Kooning, and Joan Mitchell. Evoking the themes of time and space.

Mejía-Guinand studied Architecture at the Faculty of Architecture and Design of The Pontifical Xavierian University, Bogotá. He received a Degree in Architecture in 1988, He has taught in several Colombian Universities and also, he has been invited to lecture at prestigious Institutions such as Museo Nacional de Colombia and Biblioteca Virgilio Barco.

Mejía-Guinand's drawings, collages, paintings, sculptures and architectural models have been exhibited in numerous solo and group shows, building a strong reputation over the last decade in Colombia, United States,Europe and Asia.

Mejía-Guinand's first solo museum exhibitions, "Francisco Mejía-Guinand the Order of an Inner World" was held in 2003 at the Art Museum of the Americas, Organization of American States OAS,Washington D.C. Since then, other Solo exhibitions include:

  • "Francisco Mejía-Guinand, The Triumph of the painting" at The Embassy of Colombia at Washington D.C., March 25 April 24, 2015, a comprehensive show featuring work of 25-Years survey.
  • "Francisco Mejía-Guinand 's Geometrics Jewelry " at Latin American Art Gallery PROMO-ARTE, in Tokyo, a first comprehensive overview of Mejía-Guinand 's Drawings, Paintings and Sculpture in Japan and a body of work that spans the years from 1986 to 2014 (in collaboration with Colombian Embassy in Japan).
  • His paintings are in the permanent collections of the (i) Art Museum of Americas, Organization of American States OAS Washington D.C., (ii) El fons d'art contemporani del Consell de Mallorca and (iii) El Museo de arte Moderno y Contemporáneo EsBaluard. Palma de Mallorca, Spain,(IV) Museo de Arte Moderno de Bogotá MAMBo, Bogotá, Colombia.

    Mejía-Guinand gained prominence in the 1990s as an artist who merged architecture with sculpture and painting.
