Biography

Mainardi was born in Lugo, Italy. He became a professor of mathematical physics at the University of Bologna after he graduated from there in 1966 with a degree in theoretical physics. From 1971 to 1973 he was a lecturer at the Marche Polytechnic University on a subject of rational mechanics. Currently he teaches non-Gaussian stochastics and mathematics among other science related subjects at the same place. He also gave courses on statistical mechanics and fractional calculus among others at the same place. From January 24-28 of 2000 he worked for the Center for Mathematical Physics and Stochastic at the University of Aarhus, Denmark.

Publications

In 1982 he was an editor of Wave Propagation in Viscoelastic Media book which was published by Pitman Publishing in London. In September 1996 he along with A. Carpinteri have written a book called Scaling Laws and Fractality in Continuum Mechanics which was published in Udine, Italy and in 1997 co-edited a book called Fractals and Fractional Calculus in Continuum Mechanics (also with him). Later on, he wasn't publishing until 2010 when the Imperial College Press issued his book called Fractional Calculus and Waves in Linear Viscoelasticity in London. A year later, he co-authored a third book, this time with S. Rogosin, called The Legacy of A.Ya. Khintchine's Work in Probability Theory.

Works abroad

Aside from working at home, he gave lectures on mathematics abroad as well. A few of the institutes he visited for that purpose were Indian Institute of Science of Bangalore and International Centre of Mathematical Sciences of Palai in India. He also was a lecturer at the Free University of Berlin on mathematics and computer science as well as applied mechanics. He also worked at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences in New York City and also worked at the Institute of Oceanography of San Diego. He was a lecturer at the University of Sydney and then worked at the University of KwaZulu-Natal of South Africa. While being in Brazil he was invited to work at the University of Campinas in a department of applied mathematics.
