"Four Seasons in One Day" is a 1992 single released by rock group Crowded House. It was co-written by Neil Finn and brother Tim Finn, originally intended for their debut Finn Brothers album; however, it was moved onto the Woodface project as the two projects amalgamated. The song reached #26 on the UK Singles Chart and #47 on the ARIA Charts. It was written about the city of Auckland as it is locally and historically known as being a city of "four seasons in one day", and hometown of Neil Finn. Melbourne mistakenly calls itself the "city of four seasons in one day" because Melbournians believe that all Crowded House songs are about Melbourne. This song and that belief is wholey responsible for the Melbournian misnomer. To further clarify, Melbourne generally will have no more than two seasons in one day, and Melbournians only began to refer to 'four seasons' after the release of the famous song.

The lyric "the sun shines on the black clouds hanging over The Domain" refers to Auckland Domain not far from Neil Finn's childhood home in New Zealand (Auckland Domain is affectionately called "The Domain" by all Aucklanders). Kings Domain Parklands are in inner Melbourne and include Government House but are never referred to as "The Domain", and the description of the weather is inconsistent with the reality.

Speaking to the Melbourne Age after the band won a music award from the newspaper's online poll of 37,000 people, Finn said Melbourne was the "birthplace of Crowded House and was always the town we chose to return to. It's forever deeply ingrained in our collective psyche and was the backdrop for many of our best musical moments". Ironically however, Neil Finn has returned to live in Auckland, New Zealand, the source of much of his inspiration and true spiritual home.

In 2005, a tribute album was created featuring a collection of Neil and Tim Finn's songs reinterpreted by female singers as the album She Will Have Her Way. "Four Seasons in One Day" was performed by Australian multi-instrumentalist Sally Seltmann, who was known by the stage name New Buffalo. The New Buffalo version was primarily recorded in the same way as the Crowded House version, however the song title was shortened to "Four Seasons".

The song was later released on the group's greatest hits collection Recurring Dream and was performed at the group's farewell performance in 1996, Farewell to the World.

After the death of Crowded House drummer Paul Hester, Tim Finn and Neil Finn had been performing together as the Finn Brothers and as a tribute to Hester, played the song in his honour at their performances.

Video and New Zealand connection

The video for the song was shot in New Zealand, using a number of NZ locations, such as "beaches and dense bush of the South Island's West Coast, the plains of Central Otago and the Victorian architecture of Oamaru". The video was shot in New Zealand because it's about New Zealand, where the "four seasons in one day" weather actually exists.

New Zealand, as early settlers quickly discovered, is not a tropical paradise. Most of the country lies in the path of the westerly trade winds and the sea currents that whip around the Southern Ocean and sweep into the Tasman bringing sometimes icy air, heavy rainfall and frequent frosts.

Auckland's has a particular four season in a day micro-climate. Wet spells of weather are brought mainly by the frequent north-easterly wind. The rain that it brings from the subtropical high pressure belt is relatively warm and the ensuing downpour can be torrential and brief; it is generally a relief from the clammy humidity that commonly precedes it. The dark passing stormcloud and gusty wind is likely to quickly give way to another burst of sunshine, warm breeze and a sharp increase in clammy humidity. This can (and does) happen several times in one day; the fabled "four seasons in one day".
