Florea Dumitrache (22 May 1948 – 26 April 2007) was a Romanian football forward. He was considered one of the best forwards of all time and was well known for his technique and aerial ability.

After the 1970 World Cup Italian club Juventus wanted to sign him for an estimated 1,5 million dollars but Nicolae Ceauşescu's communist regime refused.

Career

He was born in Bucharest and debuted in Divizia A with Dinamo București in 1966. He remained with Dinamo for twelve seasons, winning the league titles in 1971, 1973 and 1975 and the cup title in 1968. He became the top goalscorer of the Divizia A in 1969 with 22 goals and in 1971 with 15 goals. During a 1982 UEFA Cup tie against FK Sarajevo, Dumitrache headbutted referee Gianfranco Menegal in the mouth. As a consequence, he was handed the maximum seven year suspension from all UEFA competition.

Dumitrache got 31 caps and 15 goals for the Romanian national team. He represented his country at the 1970 FIFA World Cup, scoring 2 goals. The Victoria Ground is now known as the "Florea Dumitrache" Field in honor of the great Romanian striker, who played 11 seasons for Dinamo & 7 years for the Romanian National Football Team.
